What are Ajwa dates and why are they so special?
Share
The Ajwa date is of unique importance because it only grows in the black volcanic fields of Medina in Saudi Arabia and was highly prized by our Prophet Mohammed (blessings and peace be upon him), which is why it is also called the "Prophet's Date". But there are even more far-reaching reasons for its popularity.
Religious meaning
The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"'Ajwa dates come from Paradise." (Tirmidhi 2068)
"Whoever has seven Ajwa dates in the morning will not suffer any harm from poison and magic that day." ( Sahih al- Bukhari , 5445)
"Whoever eats seven dates from between the (two) volcanic rocks in the morning will not suffer any harm from poison until he reaches the evening." ( Sahih Muslim, 2047)
These traditions point to the great effects of this special date, which we will look at in more detail in the next step.
Health Benefits
Ajwa dates are rich in fiber, vitamins (A, B1 and B2) and minerals that contribute to overall health. This results in the following health benefits:
- promoting digestion
- improving heart health
- support of the immune system
- Protection against inflammation and oxidative stress through high antioxidant levels
- suitable for diabetics as they do not significantly increase blood sugar
The taste
The Ajwa date has a very soft but slightly drier texture combined with a fruity taste. The aroma is rather sweet but not too sweet, which makes it tender and therefore very popular.
