Medjool dates are divided into different quality classes based primarily on their size, appearance and condition. Grading the Medjool dates helps to ensure that consumers receive a consistent quality. There are basically three main classes of Medjool dates:
1. Premium (or Jumbo/Extra Large)
Size : These are the largest dates, often referred to as "jumbo". These dates are often further divided into super jumbo, jumbo, large, medium and small.
Appearance : They have a plump, soft and smooth surface, with minimal shrinkage and no visible defects.
Consistency : Particularly juicy and soft. This grade is often offered for direct consumption or in high-quality grocery stores.
Use : Ideal as a snack, for presentations, in gourmet recipes or as a gift.
2. Large
Size : These dates are smaller than the jumbo version, but still significantly larger than most other date varieties.
Appearance : These also have soft, slightly wrinkled skin, but they may have small irregularities.
Consistency : Similarly soft and juicy, but possibly slightly less plump than the premium grade.
Use : They are also very good as a snack and are often sold in supermarkets and online shops.
3. Medium (medium-sized)
Size : These are the medium sized Medjool dates, smaller than the Premium and Large grades but still a good size for consumption.
Appearance : Slightly shriveled and slightly less perfect in shape, occasionally they may be drier or firmer.
Consistency : These dates may be a little drier than the Premium or Large versions, but are still tasty and sweet.
Uses : They are often used in food processing or as a cheaper snack option.
4. Small or "Choice"
Size : The smallest class of Medjool dates.
Appearance : They often have greater shrinkage and may be more irregularly shaped.
Consistency : These dates tend to be drier and less juicy than the larger varieties, but they still retain their sweet flavor.
Use : They are ideal for recipes that require further processing of dates, such as in smoothies, pastries or as an ingredient in granola bars.
5. "Industrial" or "Bakery Grade"
Size and appearance : This class includes dates that have minor imperfections such as cracks in the skin, greater drying or smaller sizes. They do not meet the visual requirements of the higher classes.
Uses : They are mainly used for industrial purposes, such as in food production (e.g. for date syrup, date paste or as an ingredient in processed foods).
